I live here! I'm not originally from here, though.
[ okay, the hot lady blinders should not encourage you to spill your guts about your alien life, kara. just try and stay on the straight and narrow here. ]
I grew up near Metropolis.
What are you doing with your spare time? Something fun, right?
If trying to ditch my work colleagues counts as fun, maybe They're kind of a drag right now.
( that's what happens when your time ship malfunctions in the time stream and you end up on this completely different earth and said time ship then gets basically confiscated by the DEO while your captain undergoes rigorous questioning. it's decidedly not fun. )
I am a really good tour guide, if you need one! Best recommendations for potstickers and donuts in the city.
[ subtlety? what is that? besides, kara has to come up with something to occupy her time, since j'onn won't let her into the deo and alex won't text her any details. if she doesn't find something to keep her mind of the ridiculousness that is keeping something from supergirl, she might just go stir crazy. stircrazier. ]
I think your shirt's on inside out, ( is sara's initial greeting, raised eyebrows and all, as kara busts up in there, looking perhaps even sunnier in person than on her profile, if that's even possible.
she's sitting by herself at a table for two near the window, one leg crossed over the other as she leans against the back of her chair, expression softening as a smile plays at the corners of her mouth. ) Can confirm that I'm definitely not a spam bot.
[ a hand claps to kara's mouth as she surveys her outfit. ] Oh no! [ her shirt is on wrong. luckily it's an easy fix, just backwards this time, but her cheeks are colored red all the same. ]
That is... ugh. I am so sorry. I am normally fully capable of, uh, dressing.
[ just smile and nod and take a seat, kara. try not to foot in mouth immediately upon arrival. ]
( maybe sara shouldn't have said anything, but the blush makes it feel immediately worthwhile. kinda makes her think about what she could say or do to make kara blush again.
but she shakes her head emphatically at the question, replies, ) Nah, not long at all. I was just over there somewhere — ( with a noncommittal wave towards the window that looks towards the DEO. ) You didn't have to rush over here all because of me.
[ the answer to sara's unspoken query: a lot of things. most things. breathing, probably. don't look at her, she's a fragile doe and needs careful handling. probably with kid gloves. do you get the baby animal joke here.
she doesn't need to follow the sweep of sara's hand to know where that gesture is aimed at. her brows furrow a bit in confusion, but she does her best to play it off as non-committally interested. like sara had mentioned the weather or her favorite breed of dog. (corgis, obviously, would be the correct answer here.) ]
At the... what is that, the FBI field office? What kind of work do you do?
( so vague and not even entirely true; she and the legends usually end up solving problems while also messing with the timeline in their own right. but it's fine. there are no time masters anymore — there are no rules.
sara, quite unfairly, meets kara's gaze and immediately smiles probably the most placid smile on the planet, like she doesn't have a care in the world. like rip isn't being interrogated right now and the waverider isn't being scoured inside and out by the DEO. she's just admiring a pretty girl in a coffee shop, that's all. )
[ you know who fixes things? kara fixes things. or people, depending on the day. granted, her methods of fixing usually involves any number of weirdly temperature-specific superpowers and/or brute strength, but a fix is a fix.
but it doesn't make for very good coffee shop conversation. and she had promised alex she wouldn't out herself (as an alien) within the first ten minutes of meeting someone. ]
I, uh, freelance. [ kara tries to match that placid smile, but hers is a bit more bashful. ] Like I said, I'm pretty good with secrets.
( there kara goes, mentioning secrets again. it's pretty evident that she's got a few of her own, and sara thinks that the mutual curiosity they're feeling about one another is pretty ... dangerous. she knows she can be pretty reckless when it comes to pursuing things that she wants — like information, ahem.
she'll just have to tread carefully. )
I don't have the slightest idea. ( and with a short laugh, she adds: ) And that's not just me being evasive. It's kinda up in the air right now.
Oh. [ she tries to not seem too disappointed by what feels like a casual dismissal. her bounceback is thankfully quick, and altogether obvious. ] Well.
If you didn't have plans, I could show you that potstickers place I mentioned? Unless you're not into potstickers. You might not be. We didn't really — [ a jagged breath, as if the train has run off the tracks. kara realizes she's talked a lot. ] — sorry. Uh.
( said with a smile that's meant to be reassuring even if she's being a little brash about her attraction to kara, said with a hand that's placed on top of hers with a small squeeze.
sara doesn't exactly make any move to pull her hand back into her own space, either. )
I'll grab potstickers with you — or wherever you wanna go. Anything to keep me preoccupied from thinking about those guys for a little while. ( said with a nod back towards the alleged fbi building. )
[ you know that sounds that comes out of a squeaky toy when you've compressed it and slowly let the air out? that awkward high-pitched bweeeee of air? that's kara. thankfully, it's just an internal slow release of hot air.
on the outside, she's a little preoccupied with trying not to turn crayola red all over. ]
Those guys ... ? [ oh. right. ] Are you working with — you know, they won't tell me anything about what's going on in there! Are they keeping you in the dark too? I mean, what do they think is so dangerous they have to keep it from Sup —
[ and just a half second too late, that whole idea of "don't spill your secrets to the pretty girl who's holding your hand" comes right back to the surface. ] — oh, crap.
( of course sara knows who supergirl is — like she could miss the news broadcasts, the front page headlines about national city's prized superheroine, even in her short time here. the team had suspected she was working with the DEO, which she suspects is why the DEO had let the rest of them loose until they'd finished with rip. no need to get these alleged time travelers wondering about why a kryptonian was working against other aliens like herself, right?
it's almost hard to believe that the cute girl in the glasses and business casual is the one strong enough to apparently divert airplanes — the one powerful enough to cut through buildings with laser beams from her eyes. and yet here she is. on a tinder date. with sara.
her hand hasn't moved because she's still in shock. right? right. )
Just when I think things can't get any crazier — I meet Supergirl on Tinder. ( and she's just gonna shake her head incredulously. and maybe lower her voice a little bit, considering they're in the middle of a very public, semi-crowded coffee shop. )
What? No. No! That's crazy. I'm not — her. Supergirl. That's not me.
[ the barrage of frankly unbelievable deflection pours from her mouth before kara can stop it. it's almost on instinct now, this fervent need to separate kara danvers from supergirl. (kara zor-el doesn't seem to fit either one. she hasn't yet had time to mourn that loss either.)
but sara's smart enough to not buy her protests, and kara knows it the second she looks up from her flailing hands into sara's eyes. when she can finally bring herself to speak again, her own voice softens as well, and she takes a deep, careful breath before continuing. ]
I'm Kara, I like donuts and potstickers and, honestly, I wasn't going to sign up for Tinder in the first place but Alex — my sister — said I needed to get out there. That I needed to try if she was going to try too. And I guess I just didn't really expect to run into somebody who had run into the DEO, and you're so... [ she swallows, throat dry from rambling ] Gorgeous.
( well, sara has a whole bunch of ways of putting someone out of their misery, but approximately zero of them involve reaching out to curl her fingers into the collar of kara's blouse and tug her over their tiny coffee shop table so she can kiss her very purposefully. until now, apparently.
kissing her means saving kara from stumbling over her words more than she has to, to stop her from loudly discussing — yep, confirmed, the DEO. kissing her means bringing kara close enough that sara can, maybe once she finally breaks the kiss, suggest in a hushed whisper against her lips, ) Maybe we shouldn't talk about this here. Maybe we should go back to your place.
( kissing her means getting to do exactly what she's wanted to do ever since this tinder date began in the first place. mission accomplished. it might even be better than she'd imagined. )
[ at first, she doesn't know what to do with her hands. they fly out from her sides, fingers stretched out in silent surprise, and flail around aimlessly for a minute or so before dropping to support herself over this tiny, unreasonably placed table. the table that's in the way. that one.
when sara pulls back, kara gasps for air, blinking rapidly at this girl who's just manhandled her into (probably) the best kiss she's ever had. ] My — my place. [ there should be some hesitation there, some questioning the logic of taking this perfect stranger back to her apartment after knowing her for maybe ten minutes and a right swipe. but what hesitation could have been is replaced by rapidly fluttering butterflies and unreasonable warmth under her collar. ] Okay.
[ much like butterflies, kara can fly. it comes in handy when you desperately need to get away from a location. like right now. her hand fumbles, catches on to sara's, and practically drags the girl outside and into the nearby alley. which should probably cause her to blush again, but she's a little preoccupied by the whole "you nearly just gave away your secret government agency thanks to your huge girlcrush" thing. ]
I haven't — I've never done this before, okay?
[ this being tandem flying, which won't exactly work in the outfit she's got on. it's a shame — she liked this shirt. ]
( sara isn't so much shocked by the fact that kara takes her hand and tugs her out of the coffee shop as she is by the strength behind it. it isn't out of desperation to get out of there — it's something innate within her that sara can feel when their fingers are interlocked.
it's amazing — and a little intimidating, honestly. her mind's spinning as she tries to reconcile kara from tinder with supergirl. here they are, though, in this random alley. and kara's saying that she's never done this before.
done what? went on a tinder date? revealed her secret identity? been with a girl? sara's mind is all kinds of racing to places it probably shouldn't, especially when she's already not too sure whether her own suggestion to go back to kara's place was a follow-up to the abrupt kiss or to the stream of information that was about to come out of kara's mouth.
maybe she's just going to gape helplessly for a second, which is incredibly unlike her, pretty unsure as to why kara needs to change. ) I — Okay.
[ of all the things kara has never done before — and there are a lot, admittedly speaking, for the girl from good old midwestern midvale — tandem flying is probably pretty low on the list. at least if the list is organized by potential for emotional overreactions.
at the top of said organized list? changing clothes in front of other people, probably, or admitting to having Real People Feelings in front of other people... or basically any other opportunities for having to deal with being kara danvers in front of other people. being supergirl is pretty straightforward. she's good at that part.
with a blush that stretches from under her collar to the very top of her cheekbones, kara gestures for sara to give her a quick second before turning around. why turning around? because it means she can do the classic "supergirl shirt removal" without immediately internally cringing at the sudden stripper vibe it takes on when she's staring at a very attractive girl in a very dark alley. she's not going to focus on that, okay? she's going to focus on unbuttoning her shirt and removing her sweater and kicking off her shoes and removing her socks and, well, removing all vestiges of kara-buttoned-up-librarian-danvers to leave only the classic attire of supergirl.
because it's somehow less weird for supergirl to emerge from a dark alley holding a very pretty blonde girl in a fireman's carry than it is for kara danvers to suddenly start flying. ]
So. Uh. [ vaguely gesturing at her pile of clothes now in her arms. ] Can you hold this? Normally I leave them, uh, in a drawer or behind a building but this side of town tends to get messy and I really like this sweater, so...
[ mainly just try not to lose the glasses. those are important. with a tight smile, kara extends a hand. ] Ready?
( sara tries not to look — she really does; she turns away, hands on her hips, looking up idly as she waits for kara to finish changing. she can't, however, help stealing a glance every now and again, fingers working at buttons even if she can't quite see the act itself.
but it's kind of ridiculous how the removal of those glasses seems to change everything.
sure, there's no more patterned button-up blouse, replaced by a blazing red-and-yellow s-shaped logo on a sea of blue and a bright red cape that looks like it should just start billowing majestically all on its own. she'd never think that an identity could be hidden away with something so simple as a pair of glasses, but it's all in the way that kara — no, supergirl — carries herself.
until she starts talking, anyway. kara and supergirl are definitely not unlike in the least when it comes to her endearing sort of awkwardness, to the faint blush on her cheeks that sara can't seem to keep her eyes off of. )
Ready when you are, Supergirl.
( and with a pleased quirk of a smile, sara grabs the bundle of clothes and holds them close to her chest with one arm, reaching out to take kara's outstretched hand with the other. )
[ for all kara's quiet, blushing awkwardness, supergirl is fully capable of holding her own. her shoulders straighten, and rather than simply take sara's hand, she loops a free hand around her waist, pulls her towards her and then up, up, and away with sara tight against her side.
it's not easy, but kara makes it look easy. her confidence shines here, in this venue of superstrength and effortless floating, and she's too happy to linger above the clouds where there's no prying gaze. as the air settles around them, kara's cape floats up and out, smooth as glass against the wind.
as they pass over a break in the clouds, kara squints, scanning the ground below for her apartment. it's just across the way, maybe ten city blocks, and if she really wanted to push her speed they could be there in a blink of an eye. but there's something enjoyable about this, so she doesn't race to the finish line.
instead, kara slowly adjusts from horizontal to vertical, careful to reach a hand out to balance against sara's back. ]
( the sheer force that kara exerts when she launches the two of them up into the sky is enough to practically take sara's breath away — for a canary, she'd never expected to actually be able to fly.
maybe even stranger than that is sara's desire to curl in closer. she's not used to feeling like she needs to rely on someone like this, but it's either that or plummet to her death — or at least back into supergirl's arms. something like excited fear curls through her stomach as they climb up through the clouds and it's ... pretty damn amazing.
and then kara coasts a little, floats upwards until they're hovering above the entirety of national city. it's beautiful, all gleaming and bright and nothing like the dark starling — no, star city that sara knows. maybe it's that thought that, though it's unlike her, makes sara lean against kara even more while they hover there, content with the closeness, with the feel of kara's hand against the small of her back. )
You're not kidding. ( it's said without a hint of sarcasm, no dry, deadpan humor in sight. sara's difficult to impress at times, but up here in the sky with kara, she can't help but feel a little humbled by the sight — more importantly, by the girl who's brought her here. )
( sara doesn't know the exact reason why she's here right now, standing unannounced in the newly opened doorway to the captain's quarters in nothing but her underwear and a t-shirt that leaves little to the imagination.
maybe it's the fact that rip had chosen to save her, as much as she hates that fact. maybe it's the fact that rip knows this kind of profound loss, the kind that can break a person, the kind that can reshape an entire person's life the moment it happens — it had happened to him; she can feel it beginning to happen to her, too. maybe sara needs something — someone — tangible, someone other than inevitable tears and thoughts of dead criminals and dead sisters that do nothing to comfort her.
he's sitting just about where sara had expected him to be, looking pensive and worried and heartbroken all at once, right smack dab in the center of the leather sofa as though there should be someone sitting on either side of him, a glass of some surely high-end liquor sitting unfinished on the table in front of him. she doesn't know what to say, how to explain herself or this or anything. she just pads over to the sofa, feet bare, nudging his knees further apart so she can stand between his thighs, a finger tipping his chin upwards so he can fully take in the view, like she's daring him to make the first move — whatever that may be — so she doesn't have to. )
( maybe because she felt like it might offer a sense of reward for getting through a captainly scolding?
... a reward for her for getting through it, that is. maybe for him, too, she guesses, even if the conversation wasn't quite as peachy as she'd hoped. maybe it's meant to be a sign of goodwill. maybe she just doesn't feel like drinking alone tonight. )
Oh, so now I'm the boss? I see how it is
( but he'll find her in the library as promised, sitting cross-legged on one of the overstuffed leather couches, glass of whiskey in her hand to match the empty one sitting on the wooden table in front of her next to the already-open and pungent bottle of whiskey. )
( it doesn't take long for him to make the journey from his quarters to the library, not with those long legs of his and the promise of alcohol waiting. the fact that getting lost among the books — but don't go telling anybody that! — is usually what he gets up to in his spare time might also have something to do with it too as he selects the fastest route across the ship, putting himself opposite sara in just less than five minutes.
with a two finger military salute and stupid grin: )
Jesus, I would've offered booze a long time ago if I knew it'd make you so downright chipper.
( but sara's smiling, either way, brought on by jason's own doofy grin. it's a welcome change of pace from their — tense (to put it nicely) exchange mere moments ago. her head tips towards the whiskey, the empty glass, sitting on one of rip's way-too-fancy silver trays on the coffee table, the best sort of peace offering the ship's current captain can think to offer.
it's too early to boomerang back around to their conversation, that much is for sure. taking another drink of the straight up whiskey without more than a blink does a better job at staving that feeling off than biting her tongue would. )

with a blush that stretches from under her collar to the very top of her cheekbones, kara gestures for sara to give her a quick second before turning around. why turning around? because it means she can do the classic "supergirl shirt removal" without immediately internally cringing at the sudden stripper vibe it takes on when she's staring at a very attractive girl in a very dark alley. she's not going to focus on that, okay? she's going to focus on unbuttoning her shirt and removing her sweater and kicking off her shoes and removing her socks and, well, removing all vestiges of kara-buttoned-up-librarian-danvers to leave only the classic attire of supergirl.
because it's somehow less weird for supergirl to emerge from a dark alley holding a very pretty blonde girl in a fireman's carry than it is for kara danvers to suddenly start flying. ]
So.
] Ready?

Date: 2016-11-20 05:36 am (UTC)but it's kind of ridiculous how the removal of those glasses seems to change everything.
sure, there's no more patterned button-up blouse, replaced by a blazing red-and-yellow s-shaped logo on a sea of blue and a bright red cape that looks like it should just start billowing majestically all on its own. she'd never think that an identity could be hidden away with something so simple as a pair of glasses, but it's all in the way that kara — no, supergirl — carries herself.
until she starts talking, anyway. kara and supergirl are definitely not unlike in the least when it comes to her endearing sort of awkwardness, to the faint blush on her cheeks that sara can't seem to keep her eyes off of. )
Ready when you are, Supergirl.
( and with a pleased quirk of a smile, sara grabs the bundle of clothes and holds them close to her chest with one arm, reaching out to take kara's outstretched hand with the other. )

Date: 2016-11-21 03:08 pm (UTC)it's not easy, but kara makes it look easy. her confidence shines here, in this venue of superstrength and effortless floating, and she's too happy to linger above the clouds where there's no prying gaze. as the air settles around them, kara's cape floats up and out, smooth as glass against the wind.
as they pass over a break in the clouds, kara squints, scanning the ground below for her apartment. it's just across the way, maybe ten city blocks, and if she really wanted to push her speed they could be there in a blink of an eye. but there's something enjoyable about this, so she doesn't race to the finish line.
instead, kara slowly adjusts from horizontal to vertical, careful to reach a hand out to balance against sara's back. ]
Isn't the view up here great?

Date: 2016-11-23 07:09 am (UTC)maybe even stranger than that is sara's desire to curl in closer. she's not used to feeling like she needs to rely on someone like this, but it's either that or plummet to her death — or at least back into supergirl's arms. something like excited fear curls through her stomach as they climb up through the clouds and it's ... pretty damn amazing.
and then kara coasts a little, floats upwards until they're hovering above the entirety of national city. it's beautiful, all gleaming and bright and nothing like the dark starling — no, star city that sara knows. maybe it's that thought that, though it's unlike her, makes sara lean against kara even more while they hover there, content with the closeness, with the feel of kara's hand against the small of her back. )
You're not kidding. ( it's said without a hint of sarcasm, no dry, deadpan humor in sight. sara's difficult to impress at times, but up here in the sky with kara, she can't help but feel a little humbled by the sight — more importantly, by the girl who's brought her here. )

Date: 2017-01-18 08:34 pm (UTC)maybe it's the fact that rip had chosen to save her, as much as she hates that fact. maybe it's the fact that rip knows this kind of profound loss, the kind that can break a person, the kind that can reshape an entire person's life the moment it happens — it had happened to him; she can feel it beginning to happen to her, too. maybe sara needs something — someone — tangible, someone other than inevitable tears and thoughts of dead criminals and dead sisters that do nothing to comfort her.
he's sitting just about where sara had expected him to be, looking pensive and worried and heartbroken all at once, right smack dab in the center of the leather sofa as though there should be someone sitting on either side of him, a glass of some surely high-end liquor sitting unfinished on the table in front of him. she doesn't know what to say, how to explain herself or this or anything. she just pads over to the sofa, feet bare, nudging his knees further apart so she can stand between his thighs, a finger tipping his chin upwards so he can fully take in the view, like she's daring him to make the first move — whatever that may be — so she doesn't have to. )

Aye aye, captain.
then i was garbage and disappeared for however long
Date: 2017-07-04 03:36 am (UTC)( but sara's smiling, either way, brought on by jason's own doofy grin. it's a welcome change of pace from their —
tense (to put it nicely) exchange mere moments ago. her head tips towards the whiskey, the empty glass, sitting on one of rip's way-too-fancy silver trays on the coffee table, the best sort of peace offering the ship's current captain can think to offer.
it's too early to boomerang back around to their conversation, that much is for sure. taking another drink of the straight up whiskey without more than a blink does a better job at staving that feeling off than biting her tongue would. )
